Artist's Statement: The sculpture collection reflects my perception of the short story The Metamorphosis by Franz Kafka. While reading this tale of grief and acceptance, I pictured a looming darkness that did not leave Gregor’s room. The way he lived his life, before becoming a cockroach, with conformity and fear created a prison within his mind that I expressed through form. The colors included were rich blacks, muddy browns, moldy greens, and bloody reds. The rough, wrinkly texture of the objects encompass the mess he creates while adjusting to his new massive bug life. The round bed and boxspring insinuates his bug shape while the clock alludes to Gregor and the warped sense of time once his life turns upside down. The rug full of rotten apples and dark creatures immerses the viewer in a frightening textural experience. All of these details combined are a strong representation of how i perceived Gregor’s Room.
